Personal Opinions

 Hello everyone!

This is it. This is the last post, so considering the occasion, I'd like to talk about something a little more serious than usual. I am interested in talking about a current problem, and that is the impact that social media have had on people's mental health.

Of course, this problem can be approached from many points of view but I would like to focus the conversation a little bit. Imagine this situation: we have the possibility to talk at any time with anyone through WhatsApp, Facebook, etc. How convenient, right?

But what happens when this immediacy becomes the norm in interpersonal relationships? Let's put it another way. Have any of you ever felt pressured to respond to a message promptly? Or have any of you ever felt angry or bad when you don't get a prompt response?

I'm pretty sure that the vast majority, if not all, of you reading this post have been in one of these two situations. Undoubtedly, the immediacy of social media puts pressure on relationships between people, and if not handled judiciously, can generate such situations that cause nothing but insecurities, uncomfortable situations, and anxiety, to say a few.

I personally have been in both situations at some point in my life. It doesn't feel good at all, to tell you the truth. But to handle such pressure, I began to pose the thought to myself, "Have I ever been face-to-face with one or more people all day?" and in the event the answer is yes, I also ask myself, "Have I ever been in conversation with one or more people absolutely the entire time we are together?".

The answer to the last question is no. That made me realize that I am not obligated to respond at all times. It was too hard to come up with that answer, though. Plus, there's also the other person. Of course, no one is obligated to do anything, but at least I try to reassure the other person, especially if they are people I care about, that if I don't respond to them soon it's not out of disinterest or anything like that.

Of course, all of the above only touches the surface of such a complex problem, so I would like to read in your comments what you think about it!

  1. I think the same as you, the immediacy of digital communication has its consequences. I also think that many times we feel so much pressure that it's good to disconnect a bit to reconnect with ourselves, paradoxically haha
